Surafel has earned Ph.D. in Hydrology and Hydraulic Engineering in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Addis Ababa Institute of Technology, Ethiopia (2022); and M.Sc. in Water Science and Engineering, Hydroinformatics specialization in Modeling and Information Systems for Water Management from UNSESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, Netherlands (2011). He has many years interdisciplinary work experience in the water sector, especially in hydrometeorological data processes, hydrological/hydrodynamic and water resources modeling, reservoir water monitoring and flood forecasting systems. In the past, he has been experienced in coordinating, monitoring, and supporting national, regional, and international projects implementation and takes a leading mentorship role. Some of these projects are ClimDev-Africa ACPC: “Upgrading and Expansion of Stream Flow Observing and Data Management System in Ethiopia”, GCF: “Support and Sustain the Green Economic Development Strategy of Ethiopia”; World Bank: “Improving delivery of weather, climate and hydrological services to strengthen resilience to natural hazards in Ethiopia”; Nile Basin DSS analytical tool to improve the national and regional hydrological and water resources and planning information; A cooperative project between ECMWF, UNESCO-IHE and MOWE on “Hydrometeorology for Flood Risk Management System” projects. Currently, he is working for ENTRO as Hydrologist/Water Resource Modeling and Knowledge Management Systems Officer, and actively working on different hydrologic/hydrodynamic and water resources models and GIS tools, flood forecasting activities and knowledge management systems
