Get to know your local stream! With a commitment of only a few hours per month, you can become a volunteer stream monitor with Water Action Volunteers (WAV). WAV aims to preserve, protect and restore Wisconsin’s 86,000+ miles of streams and rivers by educating and empowering volunteers to gather high-quality stream data useful for decision-making and natural resource management and become active stewards of their local waters. Each year, over 500 volunteers collect data on temperature, transparency, dissolved oxygen, stream flow, stream macroinvertebrates and the local stream habitat at hundreds of stream sites across Wisconsin. Advanced volunteers support local watershed assessments and special projects by doing additional monitoring, such as collecting nutrient samples and deploying continuous temperature sensors. Anyone interested in science, the environment, and learning more about streams and water quality is encouraged to get involved! WAV also relies heavily on local WAV coordinators to coordinator volunteer training and monitoring and welcomes new groups interested in starting up a stream monitoring program.
