Social Planet: Building Australia's Social Fabric Through Connected Communities
Social Planet was born from a simple yet powerful observation: despite receiving community home care services , many older adults and people with disabilities remained profoundly isolated and lonely.
As a case manager visiting clients in their homes, our co-founder Michael Hillier witnessed how a stroke, chronic illness, loss of a driver's licence, or widowhood could sever social connections overnight. Yet when people joined community groups aligned with their interests and hobbies, their wellbeing flourished.
This insight sparked our mission: to eliminate barriers preventing people from finding friends, connections, and purpose. We recognized that Neighbourhood Centres were the perfect partners for this vision—they provide affordable, inclusive activities that naturally connect people based on shared interests rather than service eligibility.
Today, Social Planet serves over 165 Community Centres across Australia, generating 3.6 million hours of community connection annually through 25,000 activities. Our comprehensive platform streamlines operations—from activity promotion and online bookings to volunteer management and adult education reporting —freeing staff to focus on what matters most: community development and social connection.
We're proud to support the social prescribing ecosystem by:
• Connecting isolated individuals to community activities that address loneliness and build social capital
• Enabling Neighbourhood Centres to operate efficiently so they can expand their reach and impact
• Creating pathways for volunteering where people use their gifts to help others
• Supporting inclusive programming for youth, seniors, migrants, and people with disabilities across metro, regional, and rural communities
As a self-funded social enterprise, we dedicate 50% of profits towards improving the social health of local communities. We believe in the power of Neighbourhood Centres to create vibrant, welcoming communities where everyone belongs.
Social Planet isn't just software—it's infrastructure for social prescribing, helping bridge the gap between clinical care and community connection
