Building Better Reading Strategies 


Appropriate for all teaching levels, this class focuses on teaching techniques and background knowledge related to the Slingerland® Approach.  Techniques for teaching the skills of decoding, reading in meaningful phrases, vocabulary, reading with comprehension, and higher-level critical thinking skills are included. This 20-hour class will provide rationales, demonstration, and practice of teaching techniques for phonics, decoding, reading in meaningful phrases, and reading with comprehension

The two-week online class is currently only available as a summer daytime offering in Central Time.  Conveniently scheduled, the class will be held as daily two-hour and fifteen-minute Zoom sessions.  The class tuition of $970 includes the Slingerland materials.  


Class No. 2 - Central Daylight Time-zone

  • Dates:  June 28 to July 2 and July 6 to 9, 2021
  • Times: 10:00 am to 12:15 pm - Central Daylight Time

Participants must attend all sessions and submit the assigned projects to satisfactorily complete the class.


The Slingerland short classes focus on specific components of the comprehensive training.  They provide practical tools for teachers, parents, or paraprofessionals who work with children who need a multisensory approach to learning.  No practicum is included with the short class. 


SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE!  Through a Boon-Donor-Funded Scholarships grant, Slingerland® Literacy Institute (SLI) is pleased to offer a limited number of scholarships for these classes. Learn more about Boon here. Funds are limited so applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.  Scholarship applications must be submitted no later than 5:00 pm (PDT) on June 1, 2021. 

 Initial Requirements: 

  • Recipients must be willing to share their contact information, along with the reason and purpose for taking the class, with Boon 
  • Recipients will be required to share feedback on the class with Boon
  • Recipients will be encouraged to "pay it forward" with a nominal donation to Boon (suggested $5.00+)
  • Recipients will be notified of their scholarship award no later than June 11, 2021.

Continuing Education CreditThe class is approved for 1.5 graduate level continuing education units through the University of San Diego (USD). The credits are not part of a degree program and are at the option of the teacher/participant.  A link to the USD enrollment enrollment page is provided in the registration confirmation email.

Clock Hours - WA State Educators only This class has been approved for 20 clock hours through 247Ed.  Registration information will be provided on the first day of the class, however, participants cannot apply for the clock hours until after the class is completed.

All classes require a minimum of 8 participants. A class may be cancelled due to low enrollment.

Participants registering for the Central Daylight Time sessions class will be held June 28 to July 2 and July 6 to 9, 2021. Please adjust the start time to your local time-zone: (8:00 am (PDT)/9:00 am (MDT)/11:00 am (EDT)).

The Class tuition includes materials.  The class materials will be shipped out to the address provided during the registration process.
