When the Going Gets Tough: The Story of the University of Rhode Island Fascitelli Center for Advanced Engineering

Presented by:  Angela M. Fante, PE, Principal, Director of Engineering and Chief Structural Engineer, Ballinger
The University of Rhode Island Fascitelli Center for Advanced Engineering is an award-winning building design housing multidisciplinary engineering research tracks within its glass walls.  This presentation will go “behind the scenes” in the analysis, documentation and construction of the building, and the various structural engineering, construction logistics, and cost challenges the project faced along the way.  The presentation will focus on how to perform in challenging situations “when the going gets tough” – a topic not discussed often enough in the industry.

Wharton Academic Research Building, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA

Presented By:  Allison L. Lukachik, PE, SE, CDT, Associate, and Leah K. Bradley, PE, Structural Engineer I, Keast & Hood Structural Engineers
The Wharton Academic Research Building is a new construction 45,000 SF, four-story academic building for the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Business. The project included the replacement of the existing substation and required complicated construction sequencing and the avoidance of an adjacent SEPTA Trolley stop.

About Our Speakers:
Angela M Fante, PE, is a Principal, Director of Engineering, and Chief Structural Engineer at Ballinger in Philadelphia.  She channels her enthusiasm and 21 years of expertise into inspiring building and system designs with both the architect and the owner, and collaborative engagements with the contractor during construction.  In addition to her responsibilities with Ballinger, she is currently the Chair of the ASCE/SEI Public Relations Committee and a member of the NCSEA SE3 Committee. Angela has her BS and MS in Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University.

Allison
L. Lukachik, PE, SE, CDT, Associate, joined Keast & Hood in July 2012 and has over 18 years of professional engineering experience.  She has managed structural design for a variety of projects and creatively adapts to complex challenges. High quality institutional projects comprise a significant portion of Allison’s portfolio.
Examples include the Penn Quadrangle Renovation currently in construction, the Penn State James Innovation Center, and the recently completed Wharton Academic Research Building at the University of Pennsylvania. An analytical designer skilled at troubleshooting issues before they become problematic, Allison addresses concerns quickly and with strong communication skills. She creatively adapts to complex challenges, recognizing there is no one-size-fits-all approach to structural engineering.  Promoted to Associate in 2018, Allison leverages her engineering and team coordination skills to contribute to, and lead, structural design teams and to work successfully with architects and building owners. Allison has a BS in Architectural Engineering and an MS in Civil Engineering from Drexel University, and an MBA from Temple University.

Leah K. Bradley, PE, Structural Engineer I is a highly motivated and creative engineer with experience in structural analysis, design of new concrete, steel, and wood structures, and project delivery. Recognized for astute attention to detail and an eagerness to grow technically as well as professionally, Leah has quickly become an integral part of the firm, supporting a variety of projects including preparing analytical models and design calculations for proposed and existing structures. In addition to supporting the firm technically, she has become involved in the firm’s participation in the ACE Eastern PA mentorship program as well as the Leadership Board for DVASE’s Young Member Group (YMG). Leah is a well-rounded engineer that brings the same amount of dedication and energy to every project. Leah has a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Delaware.
