Upon completion in 1825, the “Flight of Five”, a twin set of five locks, for the Erie Canal in Lockport, New York were considered to be an engineering triumph.  By 1910, the southern half of the Flight of Five was replaced by a set of two mechanically-operated locks.  The remaining northern half had since fallen into disrepair.  This presentation will describe repairs that would restore the Flight of Five to working order with new wooden gates and balance beams as the most prominent features.  This restoration has sparked new development, new events, and is greatly supported by a group of over 70 volunteers who take turns on weekends demonstrating how the locks worked back in the day.

New York has ramped up its commitment to meet its Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act CLPCA) goal of 80% reduction of carbon emissions by 2050. The presentation will provide an overview of the latest trends and developments in the current and upcoming state code cycles. With an understanding of the framework laid out over the next 25 years, we will discuss current engineering design practices and strategies such as auditing, commissioning, modeling, and electrification. We will further discuss engineering technologies and concepts that are being implemented in our latest projects, both new construction and renovations, that will push NYS to its goals and beyond.

2:00 PM - Leading Edge Innovations in Foundation Design - 1 PDH
Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers
Innovative structural design ideas for supporting excavations are often required to safely construct foundations, deep basements, utilities, shafts, and tunnels. Engineers often face the extraordinary challenges presented by developed urban sites, where excavations often extend below adjacent structures, tunnels, and utilities. Excavation is made more difficult when groundwater is present, and dewatering of excavations can cause settlement damage if not controlled. Discussion of elements of subsurface conditions, design of practical and cost effective excavation support systems, and groundwater isolation and extraction technologies.  Excavation Support, Temporary Structures, Top-Down Construction, Underpinning & Protection of Adjacent Structures, Rock Excavation and Support.

3:00 PM - Retaining Walls Evaluations, Code Requirements, Safety Inspections - 1 PDH
