Fire Protection Engineering (FPE) is an accredited discipline within the engineering profession. While not practiced as commonly as other disciplines, the FPE offers the best utility when engaged early in the building design process where able to interface with other building design professionals, authorities having jurisdiction and other project stakeholders. This enables the FPE to identify fire safety concerns and program “big ticket” fire protection items such as water supply upgrades, fire pumps, special suppression systems, code compliance issues, etc., that might otherwise be overlooked. The presentation contains an overview of the engineering profession with emphasis on fire protection engineering and its role in the building design process.
