This presentation will cover safety considerations of utility-scale energy storage systems. We will discuss infamous incidents in the industry and what has been learned from them, general safety risks and hazard associated with energy storage systems, mitigation measures employed in installations, and current safety codes and standards that installations must adhere to. 

Dr. Carrie Kaplan is a lithium-ion battery expert and is currently leading the Energy Storage Safety Team at DNV. She oversees technical safety reviews on various utility- and residential-scale battery energy storage system products assessing the systems’ safety and compliance with industry standards and local fire codes. She supports a number of modeling efforts to assess explosions controls and toxic gas dispersion of these systems, code compliance reviews, emergency response plan developments, and hazard mitigation analyses. In addition, she supports authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) in assessing utility- and residential-scale BESS for installation in their jurisdictions. Dr. Kaplan earned her PhD in Chemistry in 2020 from Binghamton University and has a B.S. in both Chemistry and Mathematics from Virginia Tech.
