Understand how the MDS process drives resident’s care and outcomes, surveys, and reimbursement.

  • Understand how to use the Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) Manual
  • Review key aspects of RAI Manual and related terminology
  • Describe the elements of the complete MDS process
  • Understand the regulations for the Minimum Data Set (MDS)
  • Explain the process for the need of accuracy and timeliness for completion of the MDS

Introduction of OBRA Scheduling and Required Assessments

Comprehend the basics of OBRA assessment scheduling and avoid being overwhelmed by timing requirements.

  • Understand the required OBRA assessments
  • Explain scheduling, completion, and transmission deadlines
  • Review and explain how different OBRA assessments can affect the OBRA assessment schedule

Introduction of PPS Scheduling and PDPM Overview

Understand requirements for SNF Medicare Prospective Payment System (PPS) assessment schedule for reimbursement with the PDPM (Patient-Driven Payment Model).

  • Understand PPS Assessments and scheduling timelines
  • Review submission requirements for Traditional Medicare and Managed Care Assessments for reimbursement
  • Discuss impacts of non-compliance with the PPS assessment schedule
  • Overview of PDPM basics with discussion of the six components for reimbursement
  • Explain Interrupted Stay and impact of PPS scheduling

 Review of Upcoming Changes in October 2023 to MDS 

Discuss MDS Changes that will take effect in October along with discussion of implementation methods for new processes needed for transition.

  • Review the 2023 changes to the MDS Assessment and
  • the impact on the interdisciplinary team and organization outcomes.
  • Complete Line by Line review of MDS Assessment for Sections A, B, C, D, F, G, GG, J, K, M, N, O, Q
  • Discuss interdisciplinary team training and implementation strategies prior to October 2023.
