While Community School Coordinators (CSC) are hired to support and lead community school (CS) development, their role is often not well understood. Sometimes CSCs are seen as just an extra set of hands instead of as a strategic partner in school transformation. Other times they’re seen as the person holding “all the things” – they’re the “family engagement person,” the partnership person, the CS person. This lack of understanding about and clarity around the role of the CSC gets in the way of community school development. Ensuring that everyone - including the CSC – is clear on the role, responsibilities and opportunities, on the other hand, can help accelerate it. CS Leaders: The Role of the Community School Coordinator is a two-part, virtual workshop designed to help participants understand the foundational components of what a Community School Coordinator (CSC) does. Facilitated by the Community Schools Learning Exchange (CSLX), these interactive sessions will walk through the enabling conditions essential to community school development, use real-life examples of the role CSCs play in building teams’ capacities to do this work, and offer guidance for leading teams and engaging in long-term planning. Participants will also develop a greater understanding of topics like shared leadership, inclusive decision making, and meaningful interest holder engagement. Each session will include time for collaboration with and learning from peers, and real-time action planning.
As a result of the workshop, participants will:

What if I’ve been a Community School Coordinator for a while? Is this workshop still relevant for me?
Yes! This workshop will give more experienced CSCs a refresher on the CS essentials, will provide new ways of thinking about their role as a team builder, and offer new ideas for how to make sure the CSC role is universally understood within their school communities.
Who from my team should I bring?
We recommend that CSCs and principals register for this workshop together. You may also want to consider bringing community-based / non-profit organizations directly partnering with your school, parent leaders, or teacher leaders – folks that could benefit from a deeper dive into the CSC role.

Our site/district is looking to hire CS Coordinators. Will the information and resources provided in this workshop still be relevant/useful to me?
Yes – this workshop will provide information about the CSC role that will be useful in designing job descriptions and sharing information with principals and other interest holders about the CSC role, in addition to helping you design an arc of the year for CSC development.
What next steps will I be able to make based on the information I receive from this workshop?
Participating in this workshop means getting the opportunity to build out your own personalized action plan to guide your next steps. You will be able to communicate more clearly and effectively about the CSC role, understand strategies CSCs use to build and lead effective teams, and map your work to school priorities and goals.
