Intentionality, Sustainability & Shared Leadership
May 17, 2024  ·  Fremont High School
9:00 AM - 1:00 PM (PT)

Background

Oakland Unified School District is a full-service community school district that has been doing community schooling for over 14 years. Nested in the heart of Oakland, Fremont High School has been working tirelessly to improve student outcomes and create joyful spaces for its students to be agents of change. It has been refining its programs, strategies, and identity as a community school with deep intentionality, a commitment to sustainability, and shared leadership.

On Friday, May 17th, Fremont High is generously opening its doors to give fellow community school practitioners the chance to learn from the Fremont school community, engage in conversations around school governance and youth leadership, and visit a number of Fremont High School’s dynamic spaces, like the Fremont Tiger Clinic (school-based health center), the restorative justice room, and the Media Academy.

Whether you are new to community schools or have been doing this work over decades, you are invited to join Oakland Unified School District and the Community Schools Learning Exchange (CSLX) at Fremont High School for an opportunity to refine your community school strategy in community with like-minded peers. Walk and talk with us and see what all the buzz is about!

By joining, participants will:

  • Have a better understanding of what a community school strategy within a full-service district looks like in practice, including: youth voice, shared decision making and governance, partnerships, and sustainability;

  • Learn promising strategies and challenges around shared governance from the Fremont High School team;

  • Have candid and authentic conversation with your peers about the challenges and growth of your community school development work;

  • Have articulated specific, concrete next steps to help you work toward your goals and community school strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who, specifically, is this for?

The Community School Site Visit at Fremont High School is designed specifically for school-site and LEA-level practitioners looking to observe community school practices and strategies at the high school level.

Who from my team should I bring?

We recommend that you bring those who work “on the ground” to lead Community Schools at school sites (i.e., Community School coordinators, principals, teachers; and/or those at the district-level that lead Community School initiatives). Please note: Due to limited space available, attendance is limited to three (3) people per LEA.

How much does it cost?

The fee for each individual is $225.  Those coming with their teams will pay the registration fee for each person.

Will food or drink be provided?

Yes! Coffee will be provided in the morning before the program begins, and lunch will be provided at the end of the visit.

Give me more logistical information about the day of the event!

Parking will be available on campus but is limited. Street parking is also available. We encourage teams to carpool when possible.

As part of the school “tour”, you will be placed in small groups to allow you to see a few community school spaces.

How can I access the materials or tools we discuss once we’re done?

Registered participants will receive the materials and resources we cover through a shared Google drive.

I still have more questions!

We got you! Shoot us an email at love@cslx.org.
