Main Branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia
1901 Vine Street
Philadelphia, PA  19103

One of the most iconic buildings in Philadelphia is the Main Branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia.  First opened on June 2, 1927, the massive Central Library building was in development for 16 years, delayed by World War I, it now serves as the main library, and administrative headquarters for the Free Library of Philadelphia.

The presentation will consist of a Welcome from current president Kelly Richards, an overview of the recent renovation project of the Rare Books Collection by Tyreice DuPass which included a major HVAC overhaul and then a tour of the project led by Janine Pollock and her team.

The Rare Book Collection department houses exhibitions of historically important books and manuscripts from 3000 BCE to today.  Included is one of the largest collections of Charles Dickens and Edgar Allan Poe books.  There are also almost 50,000 early American children’s books. The protection of these rare books was critical during the construction phase since some of the pages are very delicate.
