Ferris Mountain Wildlife Guzzlers Project
Installation of 4 guzzlers to provide water sources near lambing and escape terrain for Bighorn Sheep in the Ferris Mountains, WY.
July 21 - 23, 2017  ·  WY
Thank you for helping us install these guzzlers! They will be extremely valuable in supporting Bighorn Sheep populations in the Ferris Mountains.  Your help is essential to implementing this project!

Please bring:
  • Camping gear (it will likely be windy; tents or campers are ok.  However, there are no services, aside from drinking water and portable toilets, so prepare accordingly)
  • Work clothes, hat, work gloves, leather boots with good ankle support
  • Backpack (for personal items)
  • Re-usable water bottles (we will provide bottled water and water refill tanks but bring your own bottle(s) if you prefer)

  • Keep an eye on weather and plan camping gear and clothing accordingly

We will provide:

Thank you to our generous donors who provided the following to make this event possible:
  • Wyoming Wild Sheep Foundation (Saturday steak dinner)
  • Sweetwater River Conservancy at Pathfinder Ranches (portable toilets, lunches, and grill)
  • Water for Wildlife (Saturday breakfast)
  • Carl Asbell (Fremont Distributing ) for Saturday night drinks

Type of work to expect:
After hiking 3+ miles to the sites, installing the guzzlers will involve a lot of manual labor including:
  • Digging holes in very rocky soil for the water tanks to sit in
  • Moving rocks and soil to create relatively smooth surfaces for the water-collecting aprons
  • Moving rocks and other debris to stabilize and camouflage the aprons after installation
  • Installing trail cameras at each guzzler
Terrain and safety notes:
  • The terrain will be steep and rocky and rattlesnakes may be present.  Some sites are located in the burned timber area from the 2012 fire.
  • It will likely be too windy at base camp for campfires.
