Call for Side Events

The Africa Union Commission (AUC) in collaboration with the University of Nairobi, Stellenbosch University and other organizing partners invites interested institutions/organisations and individuals to convene side events relevant to the 2nd All Africa Postharvest Congress and Exhibition. The congress is scheduled for 17th – 20th September at the African Union Commission Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The side events should be in line with the Congress theme Postharvest Loss Reduction and Agro-processing: Drivers of Agricultural Transformation in Africa’.  All side events will be held in the morning hours of 17th September 2019 before the official opening of the congress. The congress is a follow up to the 1st All Africa Postharvest Congress and Exhibition which was hosted by the University of Nairobi in 2017. The AUC aims to institutionalize the All Africa Postharvest Congress and Exhibition as a biennial event that brings together diverse stakeholders including policy makers, private sector actors, development agencies, civil society, researchers, academics, farmers, processors to learn, share information, build networks and partnerships aimed at addressing the pertinent issue of postharvest loss reduction in the African context. The specific objectives of the congress are 1) To raise awareness on food losses and waste through data and information sharing 2) To showcase effective strategies, technologies, practices, initiatives for postharvest loss reduction 3) To monitor and review progress on postharvest loss reduction initiatives against set targets 4) To build and strengthen linkages and partnerships (including private sector engagement) for resource mobilization and other activities geared towards postharvest loss reduction.To realize these objectives, the congress subtheme has been unpacked into the following subthemes:

1.      Public sector initiatives in postharvest loss reduction and agro-processing: policy, strategies and regulations

2.      Financing models and options in postharvest management

3.      Science, technology and innovation in postharvest management and agro-processing

4.      Capacity development and outreach programs in postharvest management

5.      Youth and women empowerment through postharvest management and Agro-processing

6.      Private sector initiatives and public-private-partnerships (PPP) in postharvest management

Requirements to Host a Side Event

Interested organisations/institutions/individual should provide a brief (1-3page) concept note for proposed side event. The Concept Note should include the following sections: Title of the event; brief background including rationale and objectives; approach; expected outcomes; draft programme, and list of expected participants (including number that will be funded by the side event organisers).

To qualify as a side event during the 2nd AAPHCE the host(s) of the event should be able to support at least 10 participants to attend the side event and the congress.

Sponsoring a side event at this continental convening will provide a unique opportunity to communicate to a great gathering of Postharvest Loss reduction community, policy makers, practitioners, scientists and stakeholders.

Interested parties should submit the concept note by email to the event organizer through the official congress E-mail address Postharvest2019@africa-union.org with a copy to africa.postharvestcongress@gmail.comby 30th June 2019. Note that priority and acceptance to host side events will be guided by the suitability and relevance of the event to the congress theme and objectives. Allocation will be on first come first served basis and availability of space to host the proposed side event. Notification to the interested parties will be sent by 31st July 2019.

Please note that the side event conveners/ organisers will pay all costs (estimated to be $15,000) related to the holding of the side event including for participants, venue/meeting facilities, and projector hire, teas/water and registration fees.

  • Nationals of African States who can't make e-Visa payment online can apply online and make the payment on arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport in cash.
