In Detroit '67, TONY-nominated Detroit playwright and DPT Executive Artistic Director Dominique Morisseau takes the audience on a journey to 1967 in the city of Detroit. Motown music is getting the party started, and Chelle and her brother Lank are making ends meet by turning their basement into an after-hours joint. But when a mysterious woman finds her way into their lives, the siblings clash over much more than the family business. As their pent-up feelings erupt, so does their city, and they find themselves caught in the middle of the '67 uprising.
Detroit Public Theatre’s (DPT) mission is to produce nationally recognized plays and programs with world-class writers, directors, actors, and designers in the heart of Detroit’s thriving cultural district. We engage our audience with relevant stories that illuminate the thrills, joys, and challenges of our shared human experience. We offer Detroit meaningful experiences with bold, new voices in world premieres and Michigan premieres; and edgy, contemporary musicals. We believe that theatre has a profound ability to cross cultural and social boundaries; that when we laugh, cry, and think together in a darkened theatre, we are reminded of our commonality, creating a forum to hear new voices and share our own.
