Learning Objectives:
1: Understand the Historical and Cultural Contexts.
Goal: To provide a comprehensive overview of the historical and cultural factors that contribute to the high rates of suicide within Indigenous communities.
Details: This objective will cover the impact of colonization, loss of land, cultural disintegration, systemic racism, and intergenerational trauma. It will also discuss traditional Indigenous beliefs and practices related to mental health.
2: Identify Current Challenges and Risk Factors
Goal: To examine the current challenges and risk factors that Indigenous populations face, which contribute to elevated suicide rates.
Details: This will include an exploration of socio-economic disparities, lack of access to mental health services, substance abuse, and the effects of residential schools. It will also highlight specific risk factors such as poverty, unemployment, and social isolation.
3: Explore Prevention Strategies and Support Systems
Goal: To identify and discuss effective prevention strategies and support systems that can help reduce the incidence of suicide among Indigenous populations.
Details: This objective will focus on culturally sensitive and community–based approaches to suicide prevention. It will discuss the importance of restoring cultural identity, community empowerment, improving access to mental health care, and incorporating traditional healing practices. Examples of successful programs and initiatives will be highlighted.
