How leaders talk matters, often in ways they don’t realize. In this keynote, Dāli Rivera helps leaders spot subtle patterns in everyday language that can unconsciously exclude, deter, or divide team members. Through a mix of stories, case studies, and research-informed techniques, you’ll learn how small shifts in tone, phrasing, and body language can foster trust, cohesion, and high performance. You’ll explore topics including: “Power voice” & body language: how posture, tone, and vocal presence influence how messages land (research has shown that vocal steadiness and presence correlate with perceived leadership effectiveness). (Source: Harvard Business Review) Email phrasing and uncertainty traps. Why people (especially women or those newer to leadership) often include qualifiers, hedges, or self-deprecating language, and how to replace them with confident, clear, non-aggressive phrasing. Recognizing hidden cues: how “default assumptions” in language (e.g. phrasing that implies a narrow norm) can signal who belongs (or doesn’t), and how to catch them in your own speech. Building positive communication habits — steps to practice more deliberate, relational language that promotes mutual respect and loyalty. Grounded in communication science and leadership research, this talk gives leaders tools to lead more deliberately through their words, not just their policies. When team members feel genuinely heard, respected, and safe to contribute their full selves, engagement and quality naturally follow.
