Kyōgen (狂言) is a Japanese traditional comic theatre form that developed alongside Noh (能) theatre. Together, these forms are called Nohgaku Theatre (能楽) which emerged in the 14th century and flourished in Japan's 17th-century Edo period. Both forms are performed in the same space, with Kyōgen typically being an interlude to Noh's performances. While there are many similarities in methodology and form, Kyōgen is a school of performance all its own; it is designed to entertain the audience while maintaining traditional theatrical values. This workshop aims to introduce the essential elements of performing Kyōgen as it is taught to foreigners by professionals in the Okura Kyōgen School in Japan. Participants will explore the acting methods, body positions, dance steps, chant songs, and prop techniques used in Kyōgen's performance. During the workshop, participants can also walk through a virtual 3D Nohgaku theatre with their smartphones.
