Orientation and Mobility (O&M) referrals and assessments serve as critical
tools for professionals in determining student eligibility and making
informed instructional decisions. However, prior research has shown that
the decision-making process for O&M referrals varies significantly,
impacting which students receive assessments and are considered for
further instruction. This presentation will provide professionals with
practical strategies for refining referral practices, evaluating the
effectiveness of current policies, and implementing decision-making
frameworks based on best practices. Key topics will include criteria for initiating referrals, common challenges in the referral and assessment process, and the broader implications of current policies on student access to O&M services. Presenters will introduce and demonstrate a model O&M screening tool designed to standardize and enhance the referral process. Participants will engage in a collaborative review of this tool through hands-on case study analyses, fostering discussion on its applicability and effectiveness in diverse educational settings. Practitioners will be encouraged to identify potential gaps and advocate for necessary changes within their workplaces. This session aims to empower professionals with the knowledge and tools to improve O&M service delivery, ensuring that students who require assessment and intervention receive timely and equitable support.
