Federal partners from the USDOT and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) study school transportation and make recommendations to improve safety. We will look at recommendations dealing with routing, lap-shoulder belts, illegal passing and more.
In ths session, we will step back from the day-to-day routine and look at recommendations from outside sources that can improve school bus safety. The NTSB studies serious crashes in school transportation and has made numerous recommendations regarding vehicle construction and routing. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), part of USDOT, has published research related to lap-shoulder belt implementation, safe bus stops and routes, illegal passing and more. They have several projects underway, as well. In these results we will see some things already implemented in North Carolina and focus on things that we can implement to improve safety.
