Best Practices in School Redistricting: The ABSS & SchoolCAMP Partnership
Alamance-Burlington School System partnered with SchoolCAMP to address overcrowding and revisions to school boundaries for 2026-2027. This session will explore that process and results.
Over recent months, the Alamance-Burlington School System (ABSS) reviewed and revised its school boundaries for the 2026–2027 school year to address overcrowding driven by the county's rapid growth.
To tackle this redistricting effort, ABSS partnered with SchoolCAMP, an independent planning firm part of NC State University, which uses board policy, data science, and community input, to guide districts through transparent redistricting processes.
ABSS’s new boundaries were guided by four goals: balancing enrollment across buildings, keeping bus rides short and efficient, removing mobile classrooms from campuses, and planning for roughly 13,000 new homes. In total, boundaries for 11 elementary schools and 3 middle schools were revised as part of the effort.
The partnership between ABSS and SchoolCAMP has provided a smooth process and truly demonstrates best practices for redistricting in the state.
