Social Justice is widely considered the “5th Force” of counseling psychology and has taken a front seat in the new APA Multicultural Guidelines. The current sociopolitical landscape is calling on psychologists from all disciplines to engage in advocacy; however, foundational training may not have equipped us with tools to actively participate at the intersections of social justice, social media and technology. Drs. Bedford Palmer and LaMisha Hill will discuss the development and production of Naming It Podcast as an exemplar for promoting social justice psychology through social media platform. Providing foundational knowledge, they will share strategies for using social media as a tool for community outreach, advocacy, and building a professional brand. Exploring the highlights and challenges faced with developing social justice oriented public identities, participants will come away with recommendations on how to be better prepared for the juncture where the practice of psychology, social media and technology come together.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to describe foundations of social justice in professional psychology.
2. Participants will be able to recognize and describe the intersections of psychology, social justice, and social media in our current sociopolitical times.
3. Participants will be able to expand ways to support psychology professionals and graduate students to develop identities as social justice change agents.
