The oral cavity is home to one of the largest and diverse microbial communities in the body, second only to the large intestine. It harbours over 700 species which colonise the teeth and oral mucosa. Disruption of oral microbial homeostasis can have deleterious effects not only on oral health, but also on systemic health.
