Ambitious or Unrealistic? Implementation Timeline for Puerto Rico’s 100% Renewable Energy Law.
The pathway to 100% is inevitable - but how quickly will we get there, at this rate? Residential solar + storage has boomed on the island, with the rate of installations growing tenfold since Hurricane Maria caused the largest blackout in U.S. history in 2017. Yet despite a law requiring 40% renewables by 2025, Puerto Rico today has not yet reached 10%. What’s working, that we can celebrate? What’s not, and could use some course correction?
Between FEMA, HUD, DOE, LPO, EPA and USDA, there are many billions of dollars available to support Puerto Rico’s accelerating solar + storage, much of it focused on the low-income population. How much of this money has actually turned into constructed projects as of now? Which of the dozens of different programs might impact (in a good way, or not!) help increase sales & installation of solar + storage across the various sectors of Puerto Rico?
This workshop provides an in-depth review of policy accomplishments and setbacks for Puerto Rico’s transformation to renewables, and highlights opportunities for pragmatic ways you can get involved in ending our addiction to fossil fuels once & for all.
