Every safety professional has the power to make a meaningful impact on fire and life safety. Too often, workplaces take a reactive approach, only addressing hazards when a fire marshal or regulatory authority conducts an inspection. However, safety professionals can play a vital role in identifying and addressing these risks before they become violations—or worse, emergencies. This session will empower safety professionals to recognize fire and life safety hazards as part of their daily routine. Many common risks stem from human actions, building maintenance, repairs, and renovations. From propped-open fire doors and improper material storage to unsealed wall penetrations and missing ceiling tiles, these seemingly small oversights can have major consequences. Through real-world examples, we’ll highlight frequent fire and life safety issues, discuss strategies for collaboration with maintenance teams, and share best practices for long-term hazard prevention. Attendees will also see how proactive education and guidance have led to a measurable decrease in safety violations at Oklahoma State University, demonstrating the effectiveness of a proactive approach.
