Current and future communications system of the future - will rely on an in-building component. This includes Micro/Pico/Femto-cells, as well as Bi-Directional Amplifier (BDA) and Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS). In addition to Band Class 14, building owners and jurisdictions we must also consider what it means for AT&T to be providing “FirstNet services” across their entire spectrum. In addition, incorporating FirstNet LTE Band 14 signal reinforcement requirements into future Fire Code has been a highly discussed topic recently. However, adding LTE Band 14 coverage into existing or new public Safety DAS systems has significant design, cost, interference, legal, and liability issues and considerations that have not been addressed (as of yet) with clear guidance and policy. Building owners, DAS design firms, PS radio system owners, and AHJ's all have a significant stake in this area and potential future changes the technology and code compliance. This presentation attempts to cover the significant differences in cellular vs. LMR operation and how that translates into very different approaches in DAS design and the implications for all involved should Band 14 become a code requirement. These topics are discussed at a technical design and code level, so that decision makers can plan accordingly in the future.
