Library Experience & Access Department Evening Supervisor
Oregon State University
Student employees are our front-line workers, yet many of them may not have the work history and life experience necessary to prepare them for handling interactions with the public that may turn uncomfortable or harassing. This presentation will use a trauma-informed lens to train access services managers how to support student workers who encounter harassment, microaggressions, unwanted attention, or other forms of bias at the front desk or elsewhere in the library. The instructor will present real-life scenarios and their resolutions to illustrate common scenarios. They will focus on interpersonal strategies to use when interacting with affected employees, how to navigate institutional resources, and how to design preventative measures. A combination of personal reflection and group discussion will solidify concepts for attendees.
