Access Services Departments experience constant change in their service delivery, usage, and technology environment. Micro adjustments to staff roles and department structure are often a go-to as a quick fix solution, but they don't necessarily create a cohesive structure. When large scale changes are desired, it is common practice for the organizational planning and restructuring to be done by high-level managers with minimal input from employees doing day-to-day tasks. Staff and student employees have valuable insight into patron needs and service gaps that should be taken into consideration throughout all stages of planning. This presentation will discuss utilizing participatory leadership techniques such as circle practice and World Cafe“ to enhance employee involvement in the process. Access Services employees were empowered to participate in setting goals, future planning, and restructuring the department. The details of the process, lessons learned, and challenges will be shared.
