Our academic library is committed to providing services, collections, and programs that promote affirmation, respect, inclusion, and understanding. In response to events on campus and nationwide, we wanted to engage our student employees in actively participating in these diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts. We developed a semester-long initiative requiring student employees to participate in at least one approved DEI-related activity and reflect on their experience, both in writing and in a group discussion. In this interactive presentation, we will demonstrate how our student employee DEI initiative can be replicated in other academic libraries and share our alternative to the traditional online diversity training program. While our inaugural effort succeeded in engaging students, we will share lessons learned and ideas for expanding and improving the program. We will engage participants in conceptualizing similar programs for their student employees that build community and foster collaboration across library departments.
