Everyday disruptions are inevitable, whether it's the text during a meeting, email during lunch break, or a student stopping by as you're walking out the door. Most interruptions are not on the same scale as the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought the world comes to a grinding halt. As the already-slow gears of academia seemed to stop, our library used this interruption from normalcy to create a silver lining by discovering innovative solutions, turning pain points into new services, and building on our failures. Through the purchasing of new technologies, we were able to free up staff time, rethink our space with a lens of inclusion, and offer new circulation services. What once was a stationary desk manned by passive part-time employees has turned into a 24/7 self-checkout area, allowing our full-time staff members to dig into DEI initiatives, community outreach, collection management, and roaming services.
