(Virtual Presentation) From DVDs to MP4s: How COVID changed our reserves video service for good
With the switch to online learning, the demand for streaming access to films exploded at Carleton forcing us to quickly change our workflows and adapt to a new and confusing industry. This lightning talk will highlight how we integrated licensing streaming films into our existing course reserves workflows. In the matter of one semester, we went from 200 streaming film requests per semester, to almost 1000 film requests. During our presentation, we will look more in depth at the requests we received and how this workload forced us to develop new practices for managing these purchases and licenses on the fly. Our talk will also cover some of the challenges we experienced in locating films, rightsholders, and negotiating costs and terms with vendors.. We hope that this talk sheds light on our experience at Carleton and that it can open up conversations with other libraries and vendors on how we can move forward long term in this industry.
