Alpine Conference Room
Target Audience: Everyone
Presenter: Nicole Herway, LCSW
Family court work asks you to be neutral and protective, fast and thorough, all while absorbing everyone's worst day with no reliable way to resolve any of it. Most burnout content treats this as a self-care problem. It's not: it's a structural bind. This session uses Bateson's double bind, Whitaker's use of the absurd, and Erickson's utilization principle to name the contradictions and change your relationship to them, not resolve them. This isn't about survival tips. It's a new way to think about staying in this important work for the long haul.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Identify a structural double bind (Bateson) active in their own professional role, and explain why naming it reduces its psychological weight.
2. Apply an absurdist reframe technique (Whitaker) as a real-time pattern interrupt for overwhelm or professional exhaustion.
3. Practice a brief closing reflection ritual (Erickson's utilization principle) to process a hard case or day without needing full resolution.
