Surviving and thriving as a transgender person is extremely challenging in the face of bigotry, hate, and violence. Trans people experience higher rates of suicidality, unemployment, and violence among other health and socioeconomic disparities. Black transgender women, in particular, experience disproportionate violence and death, and their experience often gets overlooked even in the midst of the Black Lives Matter movement. Tremendous resilience is required to survive and thrive as an aging black trans person, particularly women who can struggle with maturity, intimate relationships, and spirituality. This session will provide information about the unique challenges of the transgender community, particularly black trans women as they age. Participants will learn about the challenges and ways they can provide more humble and culturally competent support and care. Participants will be able to: - Increase their knowledge about transgender identity - Understand the unique challenges of aging transgender women, in particular black transgender women. - Learn techniques, behaviors, and skills to help provide humble and culturally competent care for transgender people.
