Human Trafficking in Indigenous Communities: How to raise awareness, prevent it, and how to respond.
Great Plains Tribal Leaders' Health Board
“While human trafficking can occur to individuals of any age, gender, sexuality, nationality, and socio-economic class, Native American and Alaskan Native communities are disproportionately impacted by this crime. Traffickers exploit individuals experiencing vulnerabilities, including financial hardship, homelessness, and language or cultural barriers. Indigenous persons disproportionately experience these risk factors compared to other communities, putting them at a higher risk for all types of human trafficking.” – Department of Homeland Security The Trauma & Violence Prevention Initiative (TVPI) program of the Great Plains Tribal Leaders’ Health Board (GPTLHB) seeks to create and support programming which assists tribal members and their families in preventing violence and trauma as well as supporting victims of violence and trauma. The TVPI has created and presented human trafficking prevention training at community events, schools, and casinos. As a result of this session, participants will have a better understanding of: • What human trafficking is. • Factors that contribute to it. • How to spots signs of human trafficking to prevent it. • How to respond to and support victims of human trafficking.
