Description: Communicating under emotionally trying and often-timed charged circumstances in the healthcare environment is filled with both challenges and opportunities for connection. Being prepared for these situations requires organizational readiness, preparedness, and alignment around both the philosophy and approaches to communication among all of those impacted. To answer the questions of why, what, how, and when, this presentation will introduce some tools, resources, and examples of how patients, families, clinicians, and healthcare organizations may be better served by aligning on the goals of communication and resolution programs, rather than getting mired in the historical "deny and defend" approaches to harm events.
