At this critical juncture, humanity must urgently break free from fossil fuels, but how? This session will bring together diverse voices to discuss how we can bring about an end to the fossil fuel era and a just transition to clean, safe, people-centered energy systems. Fossil fuels not only risk climate stability (responsible for ~75% of emissions since the industrial revolution), they fuel wars and ecological, health and economic crises worldwide, undercutting progress on every Sustainable Development Goal. Air pollution from fossil fuels caused 1 in 5 deaths in 2018. Despite this — and the latest IPCC reports — the UNEP Production Gap Report found governments plan to produce more than double the fossil fuels by 2030 than is consistent with a healthy planet. The world must rapidly deploy people-centred and environmentally appropriate renewable energy and move to real zero emissions. Instead, many governments are betting on continued fossil fuel production assuming hollow net-zero targets risky technologies such as CCS, blue hydrogen, forest offsets and geoengineering as escape hatches. The Stockholm+50 summit provides an opportunity to place fossil fuel production onto the centre of the international policy agenda, and the People’s Forum offers a chance for leaders from many progressive movements to convene and share experiences, expertise, and ideas. Join this event to engage and discuss policies and international mechanisms to manage a fast and fair transition away from coal, oil and gas – and how this speaks to new development models for prosperity, well-being and sufficiency.
