Artificial Intelligence (AI) has swept the globe, transforming the ways we work, bank, shop, travel, and connect with those around us. At the same time, gambling has transformed into a massive global industry that spans borders to reach devices in most pockets and purses. In all these changes, it can be hard to figure out exactly what “AI” means, and what it can (or should) do in the world of gambling. Will AI facilitate and escalate gambling engagement and resulting problems? Can AI deliver effective solutions for both persistent and emerging challenges in gambling harm prevention? Or is it all hype? This session will provide foundational insights into AI and explore several emerging use cases for AI in the gambling field. It will distinguish important types of AIs including supervised classification and large language models. It will explore current capabilities of AI systems to detect and prevent harms related to gambling participation. Finally, it will present new findings detailing what people believe AI should (and shouldn’t) be permitted to do in the gambling field.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this presentation, audience members will be able to:
1) Learn how AI chatbots like ChatGPT are built and how they work in simple terms, while recognizing key strengths and limitations of these systems.
2) Understand how AI tools respond to questions about gambling problems, explain how AI-generated prevention content may improve harm reduction, and identify the ways AI is currently being used or could be used within online gambling platforms.
3) Be able to identify at least three limitations of AI systems and know what questions to ask when evaluating new AI systems or features, especially those that may impact gamblers in positive or negative ways.
