Special considerations need to be examined as to the gambling behavior and risk associated with diverse populations. This presentation considers several factors including gambling availability, legality, type, as well as demographics and intersectionality, to better understand how women, older adults, LGBTQ+, and other populations are engaging with gambling. Implications for outreach and treatment are considered. The session will also highlight gaps in current knowledge, challenges in measuring prevalence across populations, and the importance of culturally informed approaches to prevention and policy.
Learning outcomes:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1) Describe reasons why some populations may engage in gambling behavior at different rates than the general population, with a focus on emerging adults/college students, women, LGBTQ+, and intersectionality
2) Discuss up-to-date research on gambling and risk for gambling disorder among diverse populations
3) Identify ways to reach diverse populations in outreach, education, and treatment
