California has a large and rapidly growing fleet of electric vehicles (EVs), including light-duty passenger vehicles and school buses. If produced to be bidirectional, these vehicles could store and then release power back to the electricity grid to keep the lights on across the state. In 2024, the California legislature enacted SB 59 (Skinner), which authorizes the California Energy Commission to require that electric vehicles have bidirectional capability. This session will provide an overview of SB 59 implementation and highlight project examples of bidirectional electric school buses being used to boost energy resilience.
