Scientific research findings regarding reading allow us to determine what skills are needed for developing proficient word-level reading skills. In this presentation, David Kilpatrick will identify those skills. He will also present what research has indicated about why some students struggle and how such students lack one or more of those key skills. Special attention will be given to automaticity in letter-sound skills and phonemic skills. The absence of well-developed phonemic skills is often the missing piece of the puzzle that allows us to understand reading difficulties, even among those who have received good phonics instruction.
