In the early 20th century, the Erie Canal was transformed (yet again) to be enlarged and rerouted to increase its navigability and capacity for freight. As part of this transformation, the canal’s engineers incorporated the latest canal building technology into its design. This presentation showcases several unique features used in the Erie and how those structures survive a century later. A specific focus will be on the “Mohawk’ style movable dams used on the canalized Mohawk River and towerless lift bridges used mainly on the western end of the system.
