The NYSSPE Climate Action Committee was formed in 2024 to “engage our members in advancing climate change mitigation and adaptation initiatives.” Given the premise that anthropogenic climate change represents a credible threat to the safety, health and welfare of the public, engineers should identify and advocate for the implementation of effective actions, or solutions. Do such solutions exist? Will they create the changes that need to be made, in time to avoid severely undesirable outcomes? We will identify some potential effective actions, including a summary of the actions, potential for effectiveness, and obstacles to implementation.
