By: Howard Ressel, PE; Popli Design Group – hressel@popligroup.com This presentation will introduce the concepts of roadside design including determination of clear zone and clear area, identification of point of need, use of crashworthy devices when available and ways to shield objects or slopes that cannot be economically removed or relocated from the roadside. The course will include an introduction to guide rail design, including concepts of deflection, and the pros and cons of various guide rail systems. Attendees will also learn how to field evaluate existing guide rail systems and identify those systems that should be repaired or replaced. The course will also include a discussion on what the future of roadside design might look like as autonomous vehicles and safety systems get introduced into the fleet.
