Planning and design in architecture and interiors results in the physical manifestation of a plan, the building and program intended for 50 years. So it’s nearly impossible to do as Eisenhower suggests when facing an emergency or needed change: “take all the plans off the top shelf and throw them out the window.” Perhaps this is why we ask, does planning and design work? But upon reflection, mere function is insufficient; rather, as Eisenhower further elaborates, the question is whether planning and design allows staff and building operators to work intelligently. Planning giving way to working intelligently implies a resultant set of knowledgeable actors manipulating a range of capabilities and affordances. And while the goals may be preestablished and agreed upon – winning, survival, patient wellbeing, staff retention – implementing with intelligence adjusts according to context, the building allowing the same. In this session we will delve into the underpinnings of working intelligently and the affording architecture and interiors, reviving the raison d’etre of planning and design.
