Since August 2022, Kimball International has partnered with Arigami on a groundbreaking study to explore the intersection between space and sensory attributes and how they contribute to a sense of belonging in the workplace, including health and education workspaces.
Arigami, an award-winning interdisciplinary research team, has brought together experts in design, neurasthenics, neuroscience, behavioral science, and business. The research team conducted rigorous research, including internal and external stakeholder interviews, literature reviews, subject matter expert input, and implementation of a survey using an innovative behavioral component with end users in key architectural market sectors (workplace, healthcare and education) and key regions/markets.
The research found that workplace factors combine with individual-level traits such as personality, sensory type, and biophilic preferences to create and reinforce people’s sense of belonging at work. Some of the key work-related elements include industry sector, company culture, hybrid workplace model, job role, work tasks, and space types.
These characteristics also influence personal preferences related to interior spaces and furniture-related attributes in healthcare environments such as comfort, level of privacy, flexibility, personal choices and more.
