Building the Walter Reed Military Medical Center of the Future While Delivering Essential Care in the Present, and Respecting the Architecture of the Past
During this session we will explore the in-progress project on the flagship of the Military Health System (MHS). The Walter Reed Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) at the former National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland is the site of a major military construction project as part of a greater recapitalization effort.
The Medical Center Addition / Alteration (MCAA) project involves demolition of existing facilities, new construction, renovations, and relocation of major site utilities. Significant outfitting & transition activities support the activation of several project phases of new healthcare footprint.
Under direction by Congress, the MHS leadership provided for a National Capitol Region healthcare masterplan. Together with the design team, the MCAA project developed a comprehensive facility design to ensure continued world-class care delivery for decades to come. This session will explain the site limitations, historical preservation principles, and other facilities challenges taken in consideration to develop the approach toward modernizing Walter Reed.
Construction teammates working with the DoD Construction Agent will provide insights into the project management process and key strategies used to drive schedule, cost and safety objectives while ensuring continuity of healthcare operations. Project stakeholder governance and communication structure will be described as an enabler of opportunity gains and team collaboration.
