Planning a new health facility or renovating an existing one requires multiple levels of detailed operational knowledge. Macro- and meso-scaled decisions are generally scrutinized, but finer points are often missed, requiring workarounds that echo for the life of the facility. Nursing staff may print their own signs to navigate counter-intuitive design interventions. Standard details related to minor support rooms are rarely mocked-up or tested. Locations of devices and outlets may not be confirmed by mockups but are repeated multiple times.
This session will dig into these details that are often overlooked and almost never tested in the design phases. These details will be explored through multiple lenses: clinical, tactical, and design, which in turn should 1) facilitate better user input to inform the design process and results, 2) define parameters associated with subsequent budget control exercises, and 3) affirm measurable results for post-occupancy evaluations.
