A mission of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is to protect consumers from eating contaminated food and safeguard the public health of Floridians and visitors to our state. The Division of Food Safety collects and analyzes in its laboratories food samples of all kinds, including hemp extract intended for human ingestion, to ensure they are free of chemical and biological contaminants and properly labeled. Since the sampling and testing commenced in January 2020, lead has been a frequent finding in several hemp oil products intended for human ingestion. These findings are ongoing and our presentation will articulate current findings and outline future steps as we continue to study this issue.
