Four years ago, in April of 2019, an EF-3 tornado touched down at Caddo Mounds State Historic Site and destroyed the Caddo Mounds Museum as well as their historic grass house during the annual Caddo Culture Days celebration. Survivors were scattered on the ground and under rubble, waiting several hours for outside emergency help to reach them. Those on-site responded in a tribal way, coming together to support and care for each other.
In 2022 the Caddo Grass House was rebuilt, and a rock mosaic sculpture was installed in Snake Woman’s Garden. These tangible cultural and artistic creations brought together members of the Caddo nation led by five Caddo women trainees, tornado survivors, Friends of Caddo Mounds, and community members in a collaborative effort of healing and recovery.
This session will include a presentation and panel discussion with stories of the rebuilding process, the mosaic creation, and the ongoing recovery.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will discover the recovery potential from large collaborative community cultural and art installations.
Participants will be invited to engage in an open discussion of the Wellness Tools of survivors of Natural and Historical trauma.
