Presentation will review 'barriers' and 'silos' in food and how these are mirrored in cannabis. There will be a discussion of how these barriers and silos are attempted to be broken down in food, how cannabis can prepare for, prevent and overcome these challenges. Panel will include perspective from ASTM D37, CSQ, compliance testing laboratory, laboratory assessor, worker safety advocate. Some present challenges in food are the lack of interface between agencies and departments such as USDA, FDA, CDC. We already see this with cannabis/hemp (USDA, FDA, DEA). Some historical challenges in food were test methods accuracy this was addressed by proficiency testing, we also see this with cannabis/hemp. A similar challenge occurred with regard to environmental (water) testing. Some historical challenges in food were related to worker safety, this has been improved over time, cannabis and hemp appears to have significant challenges with worker safety. Some present challenges in food are recalls, root cause analysis - we see this mirrored in cannabis and hemp.
